Your starting point is Izola – the kingdom of fish, where upon the view on the former road, which connects the location with Kopar, you can remind yourselves of Rex – the most beautiful, fastest and most up-to-date vessel of its time which sunk precisely in that area. On your way to the lighthouse – the most beautiful reflecting point of Izola, set off along the Delamaris doors and evoke the memories on fish – processing industry, the key industry of the former island. The history of this small fishing town can be experienced in every step of the way: while walking through the town’s streets, along with the path towards harbour, and with a view on chimney and the wide sea. However; the especially interesting secrets are being kept in Izolana – House of the Sea.
From Izola, let your path guide you to Piran – a place which arose on salt and where renowned Giuseppe Tartini lived. In Piran, you will be drawn to museum detours - especially interesting one is “Sergej Mašera” Maritime Museum. You will certainly be pleased with the former salt storehouse located on the way towards Portorož, where the old “lesenjača”, Istrian topo resides today. Apart from cultural heritage, Piran is also characterised by natural heritage due to the fact it represents a border with two parks of nature: Strunjan and Sečovlje salt pans. Take a walk through the salt pans and learn all the trivia on salt.
Right behind the salt pans, cross the Croatian border and take a ride all the way to Rovinj, the birthplace of batana. Hear out the story of batana, traditional Rovinj’s wodden boat as well as bitinada, original expression of Rovinj’s traditional folk song. A visit to the House of Batana represents only one of the attractions related to this excursion. We also haven’t forgotten about the Small shipyard, a place where the new batana is set up or an old repaired. Finish your day in one of Rovinj’s inns or “spacio”, as the locals call it. These are known principally for healthy and simple traditional cuisine which is always followed by the local wines and music.
Getting to Kvarner is not difficult from here. Have you already heard the anectodes on mythical animals from sludge in depths of the sea, the Kvarner Bay bottom? As well as the fishing quay, home to the adroit hunters on such? You are right; we are reffering to the famous shrimp from Kvarner with Moščenićka Draga being a home to the adroit hunters. A house by the sea, right next to the promenade represents only one of the location’s trivia which are ready to tell you a story of their own; principally on the fishing lifestyle.
In Rijeka, find out about the tradition of sailing towards the North and South America. An excursion to that town will represent a delight to every maritime heritage lover. Hear out the story of Rijeka’s sailboat “Stefan” which experienced a shipwreck in Australia in 1876. Some of the sailors managed to rescue themselves; therefore you will find the details of this event in a logbook which is being kept in Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral. You will also be delighted to visit Rijeka’s quay, shipyard, Nautical School in Bakar and Faculty of Maritime Studies.
Looking over the town, you will be lured with the surrounding islands. The town of Krk with its quay and shipyard also tells the stories of miniatures. Have you ever wondered how boat scale models almost identical to the real ones come into existence? If you have, than this excursion will bring you back to your childhood.
