Malinska
Opis
Malinska got its name from the mill (malin in local dialect) that was built in the Jaz area. Its inhabitants were closely connected to the sea, sailing and fishing. The cove of Malinska, protected from the northern bura and southern jugo winds and various other weather conditions, often served as a shelter for sailors. In fact, the first navigational light on the island of Krk was installed in Malinska. Because of its geographical position, Malinska emerged as an important harbour on the island, from which firewood, olive oil, livestock and agricultural products were exported. Over time, docks were built, and the harbour area was expanded. With the development of trade, passenger steamships began to dock in the harbour, which marked the development of tourism, today still the main economic activity in Malinska. One such steamer, unfortunately with a tragic fate, is connected to Malinska. While returning from Split to Rijeka in 1947, the Srbin steamer of the Jadrolinija shipping company struck a magnetic mine near Glavotok. The explosion caused the ship to break apart and sink to the bottom, killing the crew and passengers. After the ship was raised in 1952 by the Rijeka Brodospas company, led by the experienced engineer Karlo Baumann, it was towed into the sheltered port of Malinska where, despite all efforts to restore it, it eventually had to be scrapped. Ten years later, a monument was erected at the New Cemetery in Bogovići commemorating the 19 crew members that lost their lives in the tragedy.
