In 1853 – 1854 in Rijeka there was a private nautical school, the so-called "Collegio Nautico-commerciale – Privato convitto". In 1889, this school was merged with the Rijeka State Nautical School. In 1897, the most extensive reorganization of maritime schools in the Monarchy began. The schools were subject to the administration of the Maritime Government in Trieste, except for the school in Bakar which was under the Provincial Government in Zagreb and the school in Rijeka which was under the administration of the Hungarian Ministry of Trade.
